In early 2022, Clean Energy Works, in partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI) completed the project Accelerating Electric Bus Adoption in Colombia, supported by the United Kingdom’s Program Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT). The interdisciplinary team was made up of staff from WRI’s México, Brazil, Colombia, and D.C. Offices and Clean Energy Works. The team provided technical assistance to three medium-sized cities from different regions of Colombia to aid in their planning process for a transition to electric buses.
One of the main characteristics of this project was the focus on equity in the planning process, specifically applying a gender and social inclusion lens in the electrification of public transportation. The year-long project yielded many valuable lessons, and based on research, field interviews, and analysis, the team produced a report: Electrificación del Transporte Público en América Latina con Perspectiva de Género Inclusión Social (Public Transportation Electrification in Latin America with Gender and Social Inclusion Perspective). This document is a starting place for all stakeholders – national government agencies, local government staff, utilities, industry and manufacturers, financial institutions, academia, NGOs –to guide the planning and implementation process and for transportation electrification, enabling all citizens to enjoy the benefits of zero emissions transportation, particularly in cities in the Global South.
